One typeface, from extra wide to condensed

My entire brand is built on Archivo, a variable typeface. Its two axes, weight and width, create the whole hierarchy: wide and heavy for headings, condensed for the kilometre markers, regular for body text.

The typeface

Archivo is a grotesque sans serif by the Argentinian foundry Omnibus-Type. I chose it for its solid, athletic feel: extra wide, it hits like a race poster; condensed, it recalls the numbers on a race bib.

Usage rules

Do

  • Use Archivo on its own, with no other typeface.
  • Keep expanded widths and weight 900 for large headings.
  • Use the condensed width for figures and orange markers.
  • Set body text at 100% width and weight 400, on white or navy.

Avoid

  • Stretching or squashing text in software: use the width axis instead.
  • Setting long paragraphs in expanded or condensed widths.
  • Small orange text on white, which lacks contrast.
  • Adding shadows, outlines or fake italics.
